I just bought a 30 hp Evinrude model # e30ecoa, ser # e0531667, should be a 1986, garanteed to start. Well I got the started freed up but have no spark in either cylinder. I have a service reciept From Nov 2003 showing a fuel pump replacement and test drive, All check out ok. So, what could be wrong from sitting for about 6 months? I live in a small community and traced the history, All I spoke to said it ran fine.

Hi DJN,
Does your motor have a 2-piece red button in the end of the tiller handle? If so, it needs a clip in there to pull the very tip of that button outwards. This is a kill switch with a tether. If it doesn't have the 2-piece button, rather a single, flat button, then it may be shorted out. Trace the wires from the tiller to the motor and disconnect the ground wire from the motor block. If you get spark now, you may have a bad kill switch...
- Scott

This motor is hooked up to OMC throttle box? and has
a key for starting. Forgive me if i dont call these things by their correct name, I identify them the best I can. UPDATE>>>>>>Their is a small pin like button on the side of the OMC box that when i hold it in the engine starts right up (sounds good too) but as soon as i let off it stalls.....please help...were
soo close.

Thats the safety switch. You need the clip and cord to tie to your life jacket. Dead-man-button.

GDane's right on the money. Essentially, that's what I described, only for the remote control box rather than a tiller model.

In any case, you need to get the tether cord and clip that holds that button closed. When it's closed it actually keeps the circuit open, allowing the motor to run. When the clip is pulled it comples the circuit to ground and kills the motor. Should be an inexpensive and easy fix. Head down to your local Johnrude dealer, model number in hand...

- Scott
