Re: 3 hp Got spark Dry plugs Won't start?

I am not outta the woods yet though.

I have read that these motors should run cool enough to be able to touch the exhaust plate, and head and not burn yourself.

I was letting it run, trying to get the hi and low speeds set. After I had let it run about 5mins. or so. I decided to see how hot it was getting... it was pumping water out of the shaft and I cleaned out the water passages when I had the motor apart, so i figured it was working properly. Well I was wrong... that sucker was hot!

The only step that I haven't done is put the new impellar in that came with the kit... looks like I need to do this before I go any farther.

Is there any good references on the net or tips you guys might offer on changing the impellar. Is it pretty straight forward? I have a diagram of the lower unit and it looks pretty simple.

Those small 3 and 4hp motors do tend to run a bit warmer. The exhaust plate will definately be too hot to hold your fingers on. If water dribbled on the head sizzles, it's too hot. The head will be hot, but not as hot as the exhaust cover. By all means , replace the impeller. Should be 2 bolts to drop the lower unit. Very straight forward to R&R the pump/impeller.

Only deal with the water pump on that outboard is that when you remove the water pump housing, whatever you do do not pull up on the driveshaft. The pinion in the weedless gearcase will fall out of position and it's a real pain in the neck to get it back in position.

Not impossible, just tricky.

Oh, and note that there are four bolts that hold the lower unit on, two long ones that go in the back and two short ones that go in the front. Proof of pre-CAD design I think! :D
