so how to test this injector? i just replaced the plugs as well, they were indexed. it's runs fine momentarily and then starts missing, then fine then missing. There is no way it will run fine for 10 minutes and then go to the missing mode, if the plugs weren't indexed properly correct? it'd miss or act up 100% of the time if it were a improperly indexed plug correct? I just performed the static test with EV-Diag and it passed.

no expert on much some would say but ...injectors are just electromagnets timed to allow fuel to reach the cyl for cimbustion

the inner coil winding is basically good (continuity at a few "x" ohms)
or open (R.I.P.)

they can fail mechanically or electrically fail .. possibly overheated from poor cooling from the circulating fuel.

the fact that yours seems to fail...after a certain amount of time may be the result of poor fuel circulation causing an internal heat build up. IF you have a IR thermoemter can you check/compare individual injectors temps when your #3 begins to act up. IF it is in fact hotter it could be a good place to start searching why it is hotter !.

could be just a dirty filter inside the injector . You can have them serviced but utube has several videos on injector cleaning at home with basic tools

here is a good video on ETEC injectors

Replace injector and be done with it. Edit to add: inspect all the wiring in that circuit to make sure you dont have a faulty connector or broken wire. But, you will find a bad injector in the end. As it heats up it opens the circuit. I replace one a week it seems.

you are probably right I'll check prices and availability manana. I've never replace one in 16 years on this motor, I run it every month year round here in Texas. Appreciate the feed back guys.

Jake... agree a new injector would clear up the problem but just out of curiosity have you aver dug deeper and try to find the cause of these overheats.

thanks

i don't know that the injector(s) are/is overheating?? it's 16 years old maybe just hit its life expectancy?? electrical failure or worn out, either one. if i can replace an injector and roll down the road it's be nice.

up to you if swapping is fine go for it. hopefully you are familiar with ETEC injectors. each has a coefficient profile which must be loaded in the EMM to replace the previous profile of the defective injector. A bit of brain swap & the non-initiated could kill the EMM .

lots of documentation on the ETEC owners site ...but be warned. otherwise find a dealer for the swap.

Me.. I would still check for dirt in the ETEC screen filter

will dirt in the ETEC screen filter throw a injector 3 open code?

and it's going to the dealer manana i'm not interested in attempting to load the coefficients you're talking about.

dirt will not show up as an open code but a heat build up due to a clogged screen resulting in reduced cooling by the fuel flow may aggravate things .

Like I said up to you.

I understand the coil winding is not very tolerant if heat causes the open code and you feel safer with a new injector.

The EMM probably senses the returned 55v or the absence of coil current when it declares the "looped injector current" is absent (open code)

heat does strange things...it could even be a bad connection reacting to heat.

I dropped it off this morning so it's a waiting game now. The owner said he didn't know if he could get it out this week, I didn't ask he offered up the info. Injectors aren't cheap. I informed him of my findings but obviously they will not go on my diag.

DO let us know how it turns out. NO inj. are not cheap plus labor.

the early 2005 etec injectors are even more expensive and... getting rare :-(

So the #3 injector was replaced and it's running great. Had Redwing Boat Company do it, they're located just inside the 610 loop, Houston. Just in case you're curious it was $1040.00, TTL.

No, I would just send the next broke one I replace. It seems every two or three weeks one of my customers has a bad one. I take care of many boats with etecs on them. They were very popular in our area.
