Re: 3.7 mercruiser valve lash

I could see those in an hi performance auto application when the block or head is milled. The shims would help compensate
by raising the rocker ,allowing the valve to properly seal in ther head. Your motor does not have adjustable rockers. clearance is done using pushrods. Say for example you had to have .010 milled from the block or head. Now the pushrods would be too long meaning you have to raise the rocker arm.The shims do that. These are the same Ford 460 truck heads with a water inlet port installed.Might find some 460 pushrods that work.
Get or make the tool to do it properly.

Ok, what im going to do is just replace all the lifters with new ones.....With these being new ones, will they be easier to compress down to be able to torque down the bolts?

No, no, no! You torque down the rocker bolts with the valves CLOSED. The lifters are not compressed at all. With the valves closed the pushrods are loose. If you try to torque down the bolt with the valve open you could bend the pushrod. Read page 3A-11 here: http://boatinfo.no/lib/mercruiser/manuals/mercruiser8.html#/78

So let me get this straight, I don't need to "compress" the lifter at all? I was told to make sure the valve was closed and then collapse the lifter then torque down the rocker arm bolt....Im assuming this is NOT the proper procedure....Pretty much as long as the valve is closed, then that's when I tighten down the rocker arm nut?

I gave you the procedures in the first reply of this thread. You keep looking for an EZ button that doesn't exist.

So the valve lifter collapsing tool is ONLY used to check the clearances and NOT for setting the lash?

Correct! When the valve is closed there is no tension on the arm or pushrod then you can go ahead and torque er down. If you go ahead and replace the lifters, make sure the pushrods go back in the holes they came out of, and if your mechanc did the same when he rebuilt it you should be OK. P.S. Mine taps a little too, but I just don't worry about it ;)

Ok, I just received my new lifters. Can I just drop them in and torque them down, or do I need to lube them up with oil first?
