I recently purchased a 1996 Citation with a 3.0L Volvo engine, and have found out it has a broken piston. My gearhead friend that is helping me out, says I have too much slop in the cylinders. The Clymer shop manual says there should be 0.0255 inches of piston clearance from the cylinder wall. He checked is rebuild specs and says the book is a decimal off and should be 0.0025 inches. The block seems to have been rebuilt to the specs of the book and my friend reasons that the piston broke because it was "slapping" against the cylinder wall.

Anybody else seen this problem or have any useful advice?

It probably broke due to water ingestion from a cracked intake manifold. If its gotten hot you can be sure of it. Water test the manifold if it leaks into the intake then you found your source of meltdown. Volvo had a BAD prob with this.
