Good Afternoon,

I'm new to this site as a member but have frequently looked at past posts for tips and help. I have a 1991 Bayliner Capri with the 3.0 and Alpha 1 Gen 2 sterndrive. I sent my boat off to a shop to do the inpeller, water inlet hose, gimbal bearing, tilt pump install along with hyd lines. Today I went outside to run the boat, hooked up my muffs with good pressure water. I started the motor and let it run before I noticed the temp climbing past 180. I quickly looked at the sterndrive and water was Only coming out the prop. Water was not coming out the 2 holes close to the transom. I pulled the inlet hose off the thermostat and ran the water again with the motor for a quick few seconds and water did not come out the inlet hose. Still only came out the prop and the 2 small holes on the left and right side of the sterndrive. Do you think the shop did something wrong installing the impeller? Thank you!

if there is no water making its way into the engine bay, then yes, something is wrong in the drive or the inlet hose(inside the gimbal assy is pinched. try tilting the drive up all the way and see if water comes through then. if so, the inlet hose is too long and is pinched. if no water then the drive should be relooked at

Ok thank you, that's the weird part, I wanted to see if there was a blockage or pinch so when I unhooked the hose from the thermostat, I also put the water hose to it, basically reverse flowing to see if it makes it's way out the sterndrive, well it did and water was pouring out of the prop.

Take the boat back to the place that did the work and tell them they didn't connect the tube back up correctly in the drive

Yep, that's wrong.... If everything is correctly assembled, no water should flow through the hose. It will be blocked by the impeller. Sounds like they missed the tube into the pump housing when they reassembled the drive. Which is very strange, because unlike the Alpha One (first gen), it's actually really difficult to miss the pick up tube... :noidea:

It also indicates they didn't run the engine after the repair to confirm they got it right the first time.... Find a new shop once they fix it properly...

Thank you, I can say with the motor off, the water doesn't come out the prop. It just shoots out the muff sides. I then crank it and the water then just comes out the prop. I even had the inlet hose that goes to the thermostat removed to make sure there was no flow. It's like in any scenario with the motor on, it just comes out the prop full flow, all the water.

Yep, they missed the pick up tube inside the drive when they put it back together. Then did what I consider inexcusable, hand the boat back to you without test running it.. I see this a lot, too much. It's just mechanics being lazy, and too interested in 'getting the jobs out' than doing them right....

I totally understand where you are coming from. Im very mechanical savy and build some fun cars. I was gonna tackle it on my own after all the research I've done but decided to get it done "right". I can say I'll definitely will be calling them tomorrow. I live near Smith mountain lake in Virginia and that's where i take the boat. These people are near there as well. But I appreciate the help. The hard part is trying to talk to them and tell them that they messed up. I'm sure yall know how that is. Hopefully they won't give me any issues and fix there mistake. Semper Fi

How did that turn out? :D :D :D

Then next time, do it right, do it yourself. ;) We're here to help, and there's a lot of videos on how to do simple things like this.... Have a look at the videos I have done, they may be of help.... (link at the bottom of my signature)

I'm a newbie here too, and have found it an excellent and endless source of information. The very first thing I did, using guides I found on this site, was replace the impeller. I found it remarkably easy, and my first time doing it took under two hours (I took my time and worked very slowly - I'm completely unfamiliar with outdrives). By far the "hardest" part of the job is getting everything in the lower unit lined up with everything in the upper unit. This includes what it sounds like they messed up - correctly lining up the water pickup tube from the lower unit to the upper unit. Like others have said, I'd take it back and tell them to try it again, and then take it to another mechanic. Not running it before giving it back is inexcusable. But also take a look at the guides on iBboats and next year try it yourself. It's a quick way to save $250-$300.

Good Evening,
Well today I took off work and got ahold of the shop. He told me to bring it back so he can look over it but he was nice about it. Get there and they take the sterndrive apart and find low and behold, that pipe inside the unit that attaches to the upper unit was not on. The owner of the shop apologized and said that he had a rookie mechanic doing g the job while he was watching but he had to split for some reason and left the rookie doing it on his own. He said it was the rookies first one.... Smh.... Well he gets it all back together and fires it up to check everything, adjusts my carb and shift detent without charging me. Also I had noticed a pinhole leak in my Hyd line for my tilt, he put on a used hyd line off another boat to solve that issue and bleed the Hyd lines without charging me. But I'm back home. I greatly appreciate all the help, y'all's response time was amazing. I hope to continue being a fellow forum member and maybe help others once I'm confident in my knowledge of boating. Thank you, semper fi
