3.0 timing

1991 stingray 536 3.0 liter.
Manual doesn't address timing with points(?). I'm going to set the timing tomorrow when I get it out of the garage and get water to it. The manual wants me to install a jump wire before timing(?). I do not have electronic ignition.
I assume I am going to set timing/dwell with the drive not engaged but will it perform the same with the drive engaged in the water?
I've done timing/points on a lot of cars and bikes in the past but not sure what is going on with the I/O situation and timing.
Any direction will be appreciated!
Thanks

Use a dwell meter to set the dwell, the timing is 4 BTDC

Thanks!
I am going to have to go to the local dealer and find the manual for this specific setup. the one I downloaded has electronic ignition and no info on the points ignition.

Do you have a serial number for that motor?

If it's a newer 3.0 then points gap is .016" timing is 8 degrees BTDC at 650-700 rpm and dwell is 39-45

If it's an older 3.0 then points gap is .022" timing is 6 degrees BTDC at 650-700 rpm and dwell is 28-34.

Setting the points gap will get you in the ball park if you don't have a dwell meter handy.

Engine number is JD 4454 CO
The manual I downloaded says 016 but I don’t think that’s the correct manual for this particular engine.

Motor fired right up and purrrs like a fat cat. The trim up solenoid is not clicking or reacting to the switch but works when I jump it so I think thats the last of the pre dip check list! gonna take care of that this am and head to the water.

That number isn't quite right.
There should be a serial number plate with something like 0C856451 or 7 numerals

If that's missing, then the engine code is stamped on the block by the distributor.

The number stamped on the block is 14097080
The local dealer said that number doesnt match anything. attached is a pic of the plate on the carb. Might not even be the original engine.

If that serial number applies to that motor then you need manual 13.
That series came with points or electronic ignition.

Did you look for a number stamped by the distributor?

Then it's a 3.0L and your serial number 0D445400 is probably correct.
Manual 13 part no. 90-816-462
