3.0 OMC cobra outdrive shifting problems

I recently bought a 1988 Four Winns 160 Freedom. It has a 3.0 mercruiser with an OMC Cobra outdrive. I bought the boat with the outdrive removed because the waterpump went out and destroyed the rest of the outdrive. I picked up a used lower and upper unit with the propper gear sets for my application. The shift rod worked fine off the boat going into forward neutral and reverse. The remote worked fine gowing forward and reverse before I put the outdrive on.

Here is my problem now.

Once I put the outdrive onto the boat and torqed it down I went to check if it was shifting properly. The remote shifts into forward fine but the prop moves freely in both directions assuming its still in neutral. While the remote is in neutral the prop will not move either direction. The remote will only move about an inch or 2 in reverse and it is very very hard to move it. Keep in mind it worked fine before i put the outdrive on.

Any idea what my problem could be?

Just exactly do you have? I don't think even you know. No such thing as a Merc Cobra. PICTURES. You could have a merc engine only with an OMC Cobra out drive and if so you NEED to post in the OMC section.

Was the drive in neutral and your conrol in neutral when you put the drive back on? Did you check the shift fork height to the dimensions stated in the OMC service manual?

They were both in neutral when i put the drive on. I did not check the shift fork height.
