Engine: 2002 3.0L I/O carburetor engine in a Tri Toon. Serial # 0L614291

Problem: Will not excel past 2500-2800 in forward gear

Background: Ignition module went out last weekend after an hour cruising on the lake. It had no spark, and was told to replace the ignition module and coil.

Could not find Mercury or Quicksilver parts over weekend so I bought both parts from O'Reilly that crossed referenced with the original two parts. O;Reilly said they cross referenced to a GMC Sierra.

Engine starts, idles, and will go full throttle when black button engaged in both forward and reverse

Engine will go to full throttle in reverse gear w/o black button depressed (normal cruise position)

Engine will not go past 2500 - 2800 RPM in forward gear at full throttle w/o black button depressed (normal cruise position).

Engine does not try to stall or buck; just has zero additional power.

No problems before installing new ignition module and coil.

Could the problem be because the parts are not Mercury or Quicksilver parts?
Thanks

Re: 3.0 Mercruiser

Who told you it was an ignition module. A mechanic or a dock mate? Is this a carbed engine or an EFI? Post your engine serial so we can lookup the specs. Not to be a smart a55, but have you checked the prop for weeds??

Re: 3.0 Mercruiser

another thing to check is the coils ground the when a coil is new it has no trouble connecting thru paint but as the componets wear it begins to get a weaker ground higher resistance you have to have the case of the coil grounded the negitive post on top is not the coils ground it is supplyed be the distributer to make the coil send power so take the coil out scrath paint off where it can connect to its mounting clamp also make sure clam is doesnt have paint on it scrap it clean also then put it back in tighly but watch closely cause you can over tighten easily and crush case to pay attention weak ground will cause weak spark and no spark a spark tester with a adjustable gap can be used to see what color the spark is if it is orange or yellow its weak if its blue its strong
