I had starter problems last year and simply had it rebuilt for about $50. Had it back a day or 2 later and it was like brand new. A lot cheaper then buying new. I think yours sounds more like its not fitting right and slipping on the teeth of the fly wheel.

Strangely they have 13mm heads but are 3/8-16 threads.

Ayuh,.... That makes it Much Easier to get a socket on 'em,....

Seems like a couple washers would tell you if it was a too long bolt issue

I cheated one of these by usin' a quality flat washer, 'n a lock washer on each bolt, to make up the bolt length recently too,....

In case anyone is having similar problems, the new starter completely fixed my cranking issue. Thanks for the help everyone.

Never seen a starter that said Marine, but a lot of them say J1171 on them which is the SAE number for a marine starter

This is a marine spec. item number.
It's also on trim pumps.
Not indicative of a starter; indicative of marine spec. compliant part.
