I have a 1987 searay with a 3.0 mercruiser. The harmonic balancer came apart last week, found rubber in the engine compartment and the pulley was loose. Is this a job that can be done at home? I know I have to remove the front engine mount, and use a puller. I've seen some posts that mention pulling the engine, and I want to know if this can be done with out going that far.

It all depends on how much room you have in front of the engine, nothing more. If you don't have room for the puller AND the installer, then you will have to pull the engine out.

OK...thanks......Got plenty of room in front of the engine. Will support the front of the engine on a hoist and remove the front engine mount. Will have space to pull and replace the balancer. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.....

Hi Im having the same problem with a 3.0l Merc in a Bayliner.

Did you have any problems doing the job?

My crank has no threads in it and Im pretty sure its one of the designs where the balancer is simply pressed onto the crankshaft with no bolt to hold it on.

In this case, how do I press the balancer back onto the crank?

With a Press that mounts to the Block, rather than the Crank.......

Hi Bond o

Thanks for the reply,

please could you elaborate?

Is such a press expensive / easily available, and how and where would it bolt onto the engine block?

Your best bet would be to start your own thread. Won't be long before the people that don't read all the replies, start answering the original question.
Would also be a good idea to include the year of your engine.

Harborfreight has a cheap puller for $10 that you might be able to rig to push the pulley on. The typical puller/installer kits run $50-200.
Try renting a harmonic damper installer from an auto store or local garage,
you'll need a kit with threaded adapters so you to screw it on to the end of the crank so you can push the pulley on. This is what the kit would look like

get a 7/16x20 tap and drill-tap the end of the crank. Or, depending on what threaded adapters come with the installer tap to that size, but 7/16x20 is standard.

4 bangers do not have a threaded hole in the crank for this type of installer. They require a different type of installer..... I have always used a 2X4 and a BFH

Re: 3.0 harmonic balancer

??? Please, explain BFH....

Ayuh,....... That's Big F'in Hammer........

I prefer to rig a Push-on Press,.......

It's Much Kinder to the thrust bearings in the motor than the BFH system......
