Re: 2nd tow vehical

I don't know the exact average, since I commuted most of the time (50% Fwy) so the mileage that I saw on the screen most of the time was ~16MPG. In the end you have to decide whether you want to use en expensive big vehicle (not just gas but also maintenance and repairs, insurance etc.) to put a LOT of your miles. For me it seems it's more cost effective to split different applications between a small and a large vehicle...

That's worse than 5000lb, low geared, On demand AWD, body on frame, 4 speed, high torque engine, suv's. Seriously what does an Escalade get? About the same? Did he mean 25-26mpg?

If I drive my 6 cylinder 2005 Lexus only in the city, I only get 18MPG. The engine in the RX300 is a v6 so actually a more efficient engine than what is in my car. 16 is definitley on the low side as they can get easily 24 on the highway.

Problem with the midsize GM "5000lb, low geared, On demand AWD, body on frame, 4 speed, high torque engine suv's" is your driving a midsize GM SUV and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.....just kidding.

15-16MPG for the RX300. QUOTE]

Wait, the small Lexus 'suv' gets 16mpg? How is that even possible to get such poor mileage?

We owned two 2001 RX-300's for a few years. Both averaged 18mpg in the city and my highway driving
90% of the time the RX got 21 mpg.

$760 for a truck payment ?????, oh lord !! I would not even pay that much for a house mortgage payment. Yikes !!

No I am just truly surprised at those mpg numbers. I guess I just assumed they got mid 20's like my old and I'll bet heavier but lower tech minivan.

As for my midsized suv/daily driver described above. I bought it quite honestly because a few summers ago, our main tow vehicle was laid up at the shop literally all summer and so we didn't get to boat almost at all. When I replace my then commuter car, my logic was that I'll be damned if I'll be put in that position again of not being able to use my boat. While as I mentioned above I paid only 13k for a 3.5 year old, nearly perfect condition, lowish miles suv, I no longer really need to have a second suv now that we don't trailer any longer. Problem is I really like having all that power, on demand AWD, and all the other great features even though I don't 'need' them. Now that we have a lake home (hence the no more trailering), what I really need is a minivan for hauling more stuff than the suv can carry...which I just got rid of this past summer.
