I went to start my 1972 2hp evenruide and on pull number 3 i could hear something grinding as i went to pull. Then i could not get the rope to retract back. I took the cowling off and inspected the pawl along with the rope, but everything looked okay. It sounds like something is grinding in the recoil spring as if dirt or sand was in it. I did a last ditch effort and sprayed wd -40 as much as i could where the spring is located to see if it would free anything up , but it didnt. I loosened the top nut which holds the spring together and it started to retract back like it should. Does it sound like i have a broken spring? I hate to take the spring apart unless i just have to. I tightened the nut back up and the same thing was happening with the rope like before.

sounds like it need to come apart for inspection, could be spring, could be other parts worn.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the parts diagram on it. Then bite the bullet and take it apart.
