Re: 260 Merc 5.7 rebuild

I would be very interested in the modifications. I have a set sitting in the shed right now, just waiting to be abused....

Re: 260 Merc 5.7 rebuild

Ok for the people wondering. I started off with a set of 906 Vortecs from a 1998 2500HD Pickup. $125.00 First thing I did was removed the pressed in studs utilizing Summit Racings "Rocker Arm Stud Removal tool" (PN SUM-900136) $14.95. I then used the tool again to line everything up and tapped them. Since I was not using guideplates and I was going to run self aligning rockers, you have to use Mr. Gaskets Collerless studs. (MRG-1076) $31.88. Thats it for converting to screw in studs (Othe rthen screwing them in with sealer) You have to drill out the pushrod holes in the heads with a 1/2 drill bit also if you want to use 1.6 Rockers. As for the valve springs, I went with good stuff as I dont want anything letting loose at the RPM's I run, + its always a little better running higher spring rates with a HIPO Hyd roller cam. For springs I used all Comp hardware. Springs were LS1 style beehive springs CCA-26918-16 $174.95 , Machined Locks (Not stamped)CCA-648-16 $22.25 and special Beehive retainers so they can be used with stock size Gen 1 valve stem. CCA-787-16 $49.25. So for 420 bucks I have a great set of heads that'll be able to take 550 and under roller camshafts and take the abuse of a marine engines. Heres pics to follow.

Well, the Vortec Heads are on the way as well as a Performer Intake and next is the Edelbrock 1409. Ignition system will be here Friday, so it's reassembly time this weekend. I'll keep you posted. Should be fun when it's done!!

Re: 260 Merc 5.7 rebuild

The parts are all on the way now. They will be here this Thursday. Here is the full list now:

1998 Vortec Heads
Edelbrock Performer 2116 Vortec Intake
Edelbrock 1409 Marine Carb with the Calibration kit, stainless fuel line and chrome cover
New Ignition module
Thermostat Housing
Wires
Plugs
All new hoses

Total Parts cost is right around $2K!

It should increase HP quite a bit!

Should I be looking at anything else?
Comments?

Why the recalibration kit? 1409 is good right out of the box.

Re: 260 Merc 5.7 rebuild

We got the cal kit in case we want to go with a new cam later and want to change the fuel pattern. Got the heads, intake, distributor and carb on this weekend and it looks great. Just the accessories to go and we should be ready for a test!

Re: 260 Merc 5.7 rebuild

I first ran my combo with the cam with the stock 1409 calibration. It still ran perfect. I did however change just the secondary rods for good measure and to add more fuel so I would toast anything on a long run. Didnt change driving performance at all.

No. I copied CarCrafts build up bit to bit. The ONLY differance between my build and theirs was they used a 750 Holley and headers. They made 404HP and 434 TQ

Re: 260 Merc 5.7 rebuild

Theres been 2 others on speedwake.com that have copied my buildup as well and their boats run just as flawless.

I just noticed on another post you got the 2116 Intake. I would highly look into going with the 7116. Believe it or not the RPM series intakes are accually a tad smaller then Mercruisers 350 MAG Intake. The Performer is better suited for a 305. Hole shot between the two was identical I thought but top end was alot better with the RPM. + If you ever do a cam in the future your going to be sorry.
