25hp Mercury Outboard Problem

Hello, not sure if anyone can help me but as stated above I have a 25hp Mercury Outboard. When I mount it to the boat the motor will not tilt up or down. I can find no latch holding it in place. I am trying to raise the motor to put the trim rod in. It just wont move. Any help would be appreciated.<br /><br />Joe

What year is your motor? It most likely has some type of mechanism to lock it down. I think yours should have a lever tucked up high on the transom bracket on the starboard side, but I'm not sure. Some Mercs use a knob on the port side. Hope you can get it to move!

The motor only tilts in forward gear.

Well, isn't that slick! I never knew that,corm. Sometimes merc amazes me with thier briliant engineering, and other times they baffle me with thier over-engineering (like that in-line 6 distributor cluster job.
