I’m thinking of freshening up this 1983 motor. The harness is degraded has bare wires. Was running when parked 20 years ago. May need more parts. It’s going back on the refurbished KingFisher hull. Is this a viable option or upgrade to newer engine?
The wiring is really simple on these, not a big deal to fix. If it has good compression and it's cheap I'd take the gamble.
Sitting that long you may have to replace upper and lower crank seals, but that's not hard if it isn't all rusty.
Water pump is a must.
in fact.. all the usual stuff.. compression has suggested, Carbs, try pressure test on the GC, GC water check and new oil ! , reseal GC if need be, , grease all nipples till new grease oozes out , new plugs, etc...including any filters , tank pick-up, new hose maybe and bring a friend and 2 paddles (a small kicker like a 6hp is nice like a 6rxx or small shifting Merc. )
I would apply 2 coats of car wax if it looks decent... if not spray paint helps .
Newest " parts " motor I have is a 25 HP 4 stroke.-----Stripped gears and owner gave up on it.-----That old 25 HP 2 stroke is very durable and will live for many years with proper care.
Your gauge is probably good. You can't put oil in the cylinders then do a compression test. Wait a day for the oil to settle and re do the compression test.
Agreed ,----compression readings are a bit high.-----Mice got in there and chewed it up.----Wiring repairs are easy for some folks.----But it is proven time and again on here that it is a challenge for some.
I think the point was the oil will raise the compression numbers a bit. I wouldn’t sweat it the number are close and not low.
Get it going and after running it a few times check the compression again so you have numbers for future reference.
