25HP Evinrude Prop slippage (1970s?)

I checked the hub and noticed it has a shear pin, not a spline. Everything seems to be intact, but the lower unit does have about 1/3 of a turn slop in it. Is that to much? It only slips under a load. I checked the oil and there was no metal in it, so I split the unit an visualy checked the gears. They look good as well. Does it need a new bushing pressed in the prop? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks

See "My Merc doesn't want to go at full throttle!!" posted by Dawgfish today.... I think this will answer your question.

PG, has it allways been slipping like that, or is this something new? It does sound the the hub has spun out, but all bets are off if there is a heavy load. all props will "slip" behind an overloaded boat. My Capri knows when it has alotta pork in it (me and my buds),and I can add 1 minute to plane time per person

<br />Well, allmost. But the 1/3 turn sounds like a just shy of normal situation. I would only have been concerned if you had found chunks of metal in the gearbox. You will need a new seal kit tho.

I've only been out 3 times in the boat and it looks like it had set up for a while. The 1st time we were out it was running so bad it had no power and it may have slipped a time or 2. We tuned it up and went back out and cruised for about 60 miles and noticed more slippage. Went out the 3rd time in as many days and it started slipping immediatly. I turned around and had to come back at an idle. Again there was no metal in the lower unit. Appreciate more info. Thanks
