$250 boat (My findings, so far)

Hello folks, hope all is well, today we started the unknown expedition, to see what my $250 bought me. Well 1st off, the compression in both cylinders was great @122 lbs (see pics) Then our good fortune continued, the spark was excellent in both cylinders as well, (used a Snap Online spark tester) Then we added a few drops of fuel to each cylinder, it did almost run, but backfired. Having said that, there are a few misplaced wires, carb isn't cleaned yet and points are not replaced or checked out, and the plugs were not the best so. (Pics will show wires) so...not a bad start to this project, however my thoughts on JUST the boat (at this point) is I don't think I'll be restoring it, but stay tuned...

1968 Evinrude 40hp. Good old bullet-proof motors. If it has good compression (which yours does), good spark and fuel, it should be a runner. Yours needs work, lots of wires to replace, a good cleaning etc. I'd check under the flywheel to see condition of the coils and points, yes clean and rebuild carb, check / change gearcase oil, and install a new water pump impeller.

so even though i got a little backfire out of it, ya think it's worht it? heck it alomost started up.

I'd assume the motor has been taken care of as well as the boat has been over the last several years. I'd want to go through that old motor thoroughly before I got it out on big water. Everything Lindy46 recommended is standard repairs for these old motors. I'd say any time and money put into the motor now will be worth it later especially if your keeping the motor.

Well the boat was left outside for a long time and not taken care of at all, but the compression was great and it had great spark, yes i will be going through the whole engine and replacing some wiring as well

Easy for me to say.---I have all the parts needed for these.------If I was looking at that motor to be a forever keeper I would do this.-----Take powerhead apart and lower unit apart for inspection.-----Then you would know what you have.----Just finished putting new pistons / rings in a 1974 model 40 HP Johnson.----Fixing it for grandson and family !
