25 hp on. 1975 StarCraft Holiday 16 ft

Wondering if I would be satisfied with a 25hp. Will only use on small fresh water lakes. 80 percent of the time I will be alone.
mothers tell me to get a 40 hp. Boat rated for an 85

While the boat is light, and they were rated for massive hp compared to other boats, I know I would not be content with a 25.
It is very close in design and weight to the 16 SuperSport, and a 35-40 hp seems to be the minimum recommended in the starcraft forum.
I had an old tired 50 on my Starcraft 16' Nassau, and it was way more than needed.

First off , if Mom is telling you to upgrade , best not to argue the point. The general rule of thumb , from what I have read , is to be at least within 80% of the max rated HP. It's going to be a dog with a 40 on it , forget about pulling anything other than a fishing line . I would suggest you start at 65 -70 HP , will help to be properly powered for taking more than yourself out and any water activities along with your resale value . Not many people are looking for a underpowered boat.

Doubt a 25 hp will get you up on plane. There will be times when you have other people with you. I wouldn’t get less than a 50hp.

Also, built in an era when hulls were rated much higher than they were after 1980.

I've personally had 4 1960's and 1970's boats, aluminum, 16', 400# - 685#.
All rated for 65-80 hp.
All planed with a 25hp and 2 people.
And all worked really well with a 40 or 50.

Now my 18' Starcraft SS kind of struggled with only a 60.
But it was a much heavier boat.

So, Bobbers up, you will be fine with the 40.

Thanks Rosco. Brought the boat down for install today. They did not have cables or controller. Ordered all parts and will have to re schedule

Im very happy with my 1976 ss160 rated for 85hp and has a 2011 60hp etec.Iget the same top end speed as my friends same ss with the older 70 triple evinrude.
