Re: 25 hp merc 86 model
Hello, Riverats, and welcome to iboats.
The problem you are having is a stuck needle valve in the carb that controls the float level. It will be under the float, so the hinge pin of the float must be removed,as must the float. The needle valve will fall out in your hand,if the carb is turned right side up. Note that some models will have a small (TINY) spring on the head side of the needle,So don't loose it. If you do,do not freak, as a new needle valve and spring are available in the carb kit.
But before tearing-into the carb, gently tap the bowl, while you (or someone else) pumps on the primer. This will get you home most times, but the carb should be dismantled and cleaned properly at earliest convieniance.
See, what happens is, as fuel ages,it forms varnish..Real live varnish,(just not as refined as what they use to coat wood).
Also, a living bacteria can grow inside the tank, lines, and bowl of the carb over time. This looks like a clear jelly-like substance.
The only thing you can do, is clean this stuff out, and start with fresh gas.
And don't allow gas to sit too long,as it will form again.
Hope this helps ya,and again, welcome to iboats.
