Re: 25 horse merc

I have a 1988 25 Merc that runs just fine. It's a 2 stroke. I prefer 2 strokes because they're lighter and have fewer moving parts. If I was going to buy a new motor today, I think I'd probobly go with a 2-stroke Evinrude E-Tec or wait until Mercury comes out with something equivalent to that.

I have a 1997 Mariner 20hp (same as merc) 2-stroke, it has the same block as the 25 just smaller carburetor and other parts, and it still runs like new.
It gets used almost everyday, and still runs really strong. Really good on gas too.
Always starts on the first pull, after winter storage I put it on the boat and it fired on the first pull!
It hasnt needed any work or repairs done to it and I've owned it since new.
The 4-strokes are quiet, fuel efficient, but have alot more moving parts that could break.
2-strokes are lighter, have more power, and I like the sound of 2-strokes as well. We go waterskiing with my 20, pulls up my brother waterskiing and wakeboarding, he is 195 pounds! havent tried anyone heavier but it probably could handle a bit more.

your choice mostly depends on what you plan on using the motors for. On a pontoon a fourstroke would be better because they are quiet, good on gas and can idle smoothly for a long time. 2-stroke might get a little smokey when idling on a long cruise.

sorry for rambling on, hope this helps!

I have a 2006 25 HP 4 Stroke Mercury, it's only 10 months old and I HATE IT!!!! This was the worst purchase I have ever made. It's been in the shop 5 times in these 10 months for the same problem and it still hasn't been fixed. I have made up my mind that after the first of the year I going to to trade it in for a good motor, maybe a Honda or Yamaha. I will never buy another Mercury and I suggest that you don't either.

I have a bulletproof mercury 1997 8hp 2 stroke, I've had it when i was younger, I ran it pretty hard for a large amounts of hours and I'm sure it still has great compression since it starts first pull constanly. Only thing I have ever done to it maintenance wise is lower unit oil, spark plugs, and anodes, I havent even lubricated the shifting mechanisms ( i should) but havent, and still no problems.
