I am planning on buying a new 25 HP outboard soon,i have about 3 different model in mind, and the 4th is the 25Hp E-Tec. i am curious if any one has any experience with this outboard ,i plan to slow troll a lot in the local rivers and i am wondering if the E-Tec 2 stroke would be good for long periods of trolling at low speed.

You may want to tell us what boat this will be on, it can make a difference. also what type of trolling, speeds can vary a great deal depending the fish you're after. As for it runnning at trolling RPMs for long periods of time.. not an issue.

Boat is a 14 ft Gregor, we troll up river for striped bass and usually 2 to 4 mph.

The nice thing about that motor is the rpm button on the tiller handle that allows you to fine tune your trolling speed.

+1. Etec would be my first choice. Not only is the idle adjust sweet, but they have no break-in period, no service for 3yrs/300 hrs., good old fashion 2-stroke torque, cool white paint job and they're made in the USA.

Are you planning on just trolling with it or main propulsion. If main the 25hp is good to go. If just trolling, get a 6hp or so.

So this horse doesn't need a leg oil change every 100 hours use, no spark plug change, no nothing, hard to believe...

I don't own an Etec myself, but the 3yr./300hr. claim is apparently true. The one catch is that most maintenance is pretty high tech and often requires dealer servicing. For example, you can't just swap spark plugs, they have to be properly gaped, indexed, and torqued, etc...As a result, when the motor does go on the fritz you have to take it to the shop so their computer can talk to your motor's computer, but they may have an "app" for that sort of thing now.

I plan on using it for both,i had a 25 hp Johnson and it trolled the boat ok, i have read A LOT of reviews and was concerned about trolling with the E-Tec, a bunch of reviews said they have had over heating problems and that is a concern for me.

I work at a dealer that sells the Evinrude E-TEC and would highly recommend the outboard. The three year no maintenance schedule us great. We just don't see them back unless it is for the regular three year service. The cost of the service is minimal. Customers seem to be very happy with their motor. We normally put on about 50 to 75 hrs in a season and haven't seen any overheat problems. Hope the info helps.

It's not a three year no maintenance schedule...It's three years of no DEALER scheduled maintenance. Huge difference. I can't believe that all the people who perpetuate this myth do so because they do not understand that.

However, the 25 Etec is a nice little engine that trolls as well as anything else and the current model does not have any problems.

Correct and compared to any other motor on the water, you do not have to change the engine oil, oil filter, manually fog the engine or set the valves, as is the case with some four stroke outboards.

The winterizing process of the E-TEC is a simple procedure that the customer can do at home and not have to take to a service shop.

The remaining suggestions for the seasonal storage are listed in the owners manual and are very simple to do.

No tune ups, no 20 hr check, just simply use it. You also have have the piece of mind that you are using the cleanest outboard on the water. Evinrude E-TEC is the only engine to win the clean air excellence award from the EPA.

No myth and nothing to hide. It doesn't get any easier than the E-TEC.

AS always, stay safe and have fun on the water.

And it won't make oil like many of the four strokes do when propped incorrectly and trolled for long periods of time.

"No myth and nothing to hide. It doesn't get any easier than the E-TEC."

Your right...The perpetuation of the three year no maintenance jingle is just a lie, not a myth:)

And the other DFI models from Yamaha, Mercury and Tohatsu don't have to have their oil changed or change the oil filter or set valves or have a tune up or any of the other crap that a four-stroke has to have either. And just like every other brand on the market, Evinrude's can have the necessary maintenance done by someone other than an authorized dealer.

What I'm getting at here is that the three year thing is an advertising jingle with holes and that when someone repeats it they are perpetuating a falsehood by implication.

I like two-stroke DFI and I like Evinrude...It's a great product. But the jingle, as repeated by many, is false.

The 3 Rules:

1) Look in your service manual first...Then ask me if it is correct.
2) Understand that your desire to repair your engine does not mean that you have the ability to do so.
3) If you are confused, take your engine into a dealer..Then let them be confused...At least, in theory, they sent someone to outboard 101.

I love it !!!!

Can I have your permission to use rule #2 in my posts on the 'net, if the situation calls for it ?

Re: 25 E-Tec for trolling????

No scheduled dealer maintenance for three years or three hundred hours. Not a lie just the facts!!! There is no other motor on the water that self winterizes!!!

It's an awesome product and have no problem suggesting to anyone that they should own one!!! Besides it is the only engine on the water to again reiterate, that has won the clean air excellence award from the EPA. No other of DI outboards, Mercury, Yamaha, or Tohatsu can lay claim.

Have fun on the water!!!

Re: 25 E-Tec for trolling????

Please go back and re-read my posts. My only complaint is when people leave out the dealer part of the no maintenance statement. It's a fine product. As to it self winterizes...Seriously? It has a feature where it will automatically fog itself. That's neat and no one else has it, but that's only part of winterizing an outboard. Self winterize is a statement that misleads people....I actually haven't seen Evinrude saying that though. The clean air award is great, but, who cares? So some Fruitcake at the EPA got all gooey over it being a clean engine. Kudos to Evinrude, but it means nothing in reality because it was a subjective award. IE There was no lab test where the brands were all lined up and Evinrude won because it was leaps and bounds better. The fact is, in some models, in some categories' it is better and in some models and some categories, it's not.

And it is a really good outboard, my second favorite as I love 2-stroke DFI and Evinrude is a quality product. I have no problem recommending them and do sell them to various government agencies when they ask for that brand.
