23F Fuel sender replacement ?

The fuel sending unit in my boat has not worked for 2-3 years. The biggest problem is that the sender does not sit under the removable deck plate above the fuel tank. It is off to one side under the rigid deck.

Does anyone know of any tricks to get the sender out without cutting a bigger hole in the deck? It looks like my only real option is to cut a bigger hole in the deck, swap out the fuel sending unit, and install a bigger deck plate.

Anyone done this before ? After that, how do I determine what replacement sending unit I need ? My boat has a 90 gallon tank.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: 23F Fuel sender replacement ?

my access hole is located over the fuel shutoff and doesnt allow change out of the fuel sender through it. But I have a much larger access panel thats screwed and caulked into the floor that I could remove to change it (and the whole tank if need be) Assuming you dont have that?

No, I don't. The rest of the deck is molded as part of the "top half" before they are mated and screwed together at the gunnel.

Looks like I'll be getting friendly with a jigsaw.

My biggest concern is the weight bearing capacity of the new, bigger deck plate.

Thanks,

Jim

Can't do that either. The new 5 inch plate would overlap the existing plate. The sending unit is only about 2-3 inches too far away to get to with the existing plate. Close enough to see it, but far enough away that it won't come out the existing hole. If it were further away, a second, small plate would do the trick. Thanks for the reply, though.
