Hello there, I'm new to this site and in need of some recommendations. First time buying a boat, got a good deal on her because of some the engine and some upholstery restoration needed. This is a retirement/ birthday gift for my father.

I have since taken the 2335 sport into the repair shop, and the mechanic says the engine alone with cost me 9,000. I may not be mechanically inclined but I know a thing o two about numbers! I did some research online and found this forum and some retailers. I see that the price ranges for a new replacement engine is around 7,000-8,000 and for a re-manufactured engine is 1,600-5,000. I am leaning towards a re-manufactured engine. Anyone have any recommendation on reputable engine retailers or upholsters?

Most of the guys w/ boats in the dry dock, are working on their own boats. But if you'll post your approximate location, or at least a state, someone might know someone..

Welcome Heathroger. Your boat is the cuddy version of mine plus or minus a year or two. I'd like to see and know more about it. Like jb said, info is good. The more details the better. Oh, and pictures... lots of pictures.

This is a good place to start. Really good website for browsing. Michigan Motorz | Marine Engine Parts Sales & Service | Shipping World Wide

Oh, and not being picky or anything, but 1-P, 2-R's, and 3-A's. :) Chaparral.

Yes, one of the trickier boat brands to spell. - Chaparral . . . So, take that into consideration on your next boat choice.

For now, you may just want to get a simpler more ready-to-go gift for the father, as the boat may take a while.

As the others have said, more info about the engine/outdrive, etc. along with some pictures would be very helpful. $9K is way pricey for an engine replacement and not a good investment. Also, tell us where you are as that can make a difference in choosing a supplier. (shipping costs, etc)

I would look at "Michigan Motorz" and "Doug Russell" web sites to see what the costs are going to be for various options. shipping costs may be an issue as well. There may also be some local sources of rebuilt engines, depending on where you are. Rebuilt marine engines are a bit of a crap-shoot, so your best bet is to get a new engine.

If you are mechanically inclined, then you could do a new 'long block' replacement, and use the current engine as a 'donor' for the rest of the parts. A complete/full engine replacement will be about double or triple the cost of a long block, as you mentioned.

If you have the engine replaced by a shop, be prepared to pay about double the price of the engine in total to cover installation. So, the numbers thing will catch up to you. If you decide to do the installation yourself, then you will need a way to hoist the old engine out, put the new engine in, etc.

As far as the upholstery, you could bring the boat (or just the seat cushions, etc) to an automotive upholstery shop. It should be pale in cost compared to the engine, but shop it around and seek local references.

BTW - what is the issue with the engine? Is a new engine really required or could a local machine shop address the issues.

I have done both upholstery and engine replacement/rebuild on my previous boat, and it was wicked fun :D

Ok Folks been out of town for work and doing my research on the road. Spoke to the Mechanic the head gaskets are completely blown. There is white smoke when he runs the engine and it seems for sure I need to replace the engine. I have looked at a few places locally and nationally. I am leaning towards Rapido Marine and Michigan Motorz. Saw the reviews on here and some other blogs and review sites. Still a bit undecided. Will call them later today.

As far as the Upholstery, I am completely in the dark, any recommendations in the Michigan area?
