My brother in law found this motor in his shed when he bought his house and we are trying to find out whether it is usable or a parts motor. The lower unit was disconnected and set to the side. I"m not familiar with Merc's., so pardon my question if its silly... The drive shaft does not have any splines at the top and I'm wondering if this is normal or if it was sheared off and is now stuck in the power head. See the pics, in the close up I'm pointing to the top of the drive shaft

Second question , we couldn't find a name plate to identify the model or s/n. Does anyone out there have an idea what year it might be from the pics?

Thanks in advance.

Scott;

Can you find a disc like this on the powerhead with the s/n?

The driveshaft should have splines at the top. Is there anything in the bottom end of the crank where the driveshaft should fit? If it is solid, that is the sheared off splined portion of the top of the driveshaft. If you see a female spline coupling, then you should be able to fit a new driveshaft.

I guess thats a picture of a welch plug? I'll look for one on the powerhead. Thanks.

I found a few pictures on ebay for these lower units and didn't see any without the splines so I figured something was wrong here. I don't see how the heck it could get sheared off like that, it's kind of weird. We haven't tried looking up into the power head, but will try next time I'm over there. I"m not getting my hopes up for this motor....Thanks again.
