225 johnson taper pin

Have to pull crankcase cover due to blown piston.Taper pin is of some concern and my final thing to do.Question is can i just drill it out and replace it? seems resonable as it's near impossible to remove it without mushrooming the head.Any input will help. thanks

No need to drill.
I grasp the exposed length with a Vise Grip. Claamp it so tight you can barely snap the pliers closed. Then, you should be able to rotate the pin, while prying between the block and the Vise Grip with a large screwdriver.
Rotate back and forth, pry, and it will come out.
They are about $3.50 if you want to replace it.

Never pry on either the block or crankcase (front half) mating surface. Damage may result in a junk block. The tapered pin can easily be driven out by tapping it towards the crancase side (front half) from the block side. Driving it towards the block will just jam it in the hole and may split the crankside side.

Just to clarify, I was not talking about prying against the crankcase mating surface. With the pin in, the mated surfaces are probably still together.
You pry between the block (outside surface) and the Vise Grip. Twist/rotate Vise Grip and pin rotates out. Damage done???...just some tooth marks on the exposed part of the pin. Just to clarify.

easier way is to use a 6inch c clamp i put a socket on the top side big enough for pin to go through than spin the clamp comes right up no damageor mushrooming .migt need a little shim under left side of the socket cause theres a tab on the block there i used some washers just finished my 225 good luck

On my engines, the taper pin protrudes only about 1/8" on the narrow side. The wide side has about 1/2" showing.
How do you press it out with a c-clamp? Seems to me it would only move
1/8" of an inch and the clamp would stop against the block.

UNLESS, you are pressing it out AFTER the block halves are separated, which is not the scenario. I take the pin out first, before the bolts are even removed, with the two block halves still together, using my method described above.

Can you explain your method more please?

i did forget to mention that i fininish it off with a guide pin so to speakthats about 1/2 inch long with a big head the clamp idea came to me one night when tearing mine down i was looking all over my garage for some thing to build one of the tools in the manual than it came to me it was out in minutes no damage kinda like a reverse press the tool would of taken forever to build my taper pin was about 1/4 inch to the inside hope this helps phil

OK, now I see....kind of a key point to leave out...I just couldn't really see how a c-clamp could do the job by itself....unless you had milled the c-clamp into a thin pushing rod shape....

thanks for the input.i have very,very litle room to get a punch on it,much les the extreme angle at which it would be struck at. Attempted to use punch and quickly realized it would not work(without mushroomin head).Gonna try thr pull and pry mode,lube it and twist may move it.Will keep u updated..
