This summer my friends and I purchased a semi working 1969 Cheiftain. As we are from Minnesota we are more familiar with Lunds, Crestliners, Northlands Etc. However The Lund 2150 Tyee Lund that I had purchased for the project had too many issues ($750.00 paid with trailer Sold $1150.00 can't complain). As we all have a limited amount of time off in the summer months and all live within 20 minutes of great fishing in Lake Superior, we decided to go together on a lake boat with a cabin on it for weekend getaways and the like. The guy that owns the bait shop nearest to my cabin had the Cheiftain for sale for nearly a year. He had recently upgraded to a 1986 Crestliner Saber so he wanted to get rid of this boat. I waited untill he had cut the price in half and then offered him 200 bucks less if he threw in the trailer. It is a 1969 Chieftain with a 120 Mercruiser 4cyl in it. We put it in the water and took it for a spin along the St. Louis Bay in Lake Superior. Aside from a few leaky rivets and a poorly shifting outdrive the boat was fairly sound. As I read the thread from a boat being restored by Alpheus, I was inspired to post the progress and what we have and are doing to date.
There are five of us that have gone in on the boat. We all have way too little time in the summer and way too much time in the winter. I, I believe am the only one that has restored a boat before. We will se how it goes.

Hey gus, welcome to the drydock. With 5 of you working on her you won't lack for help. Or ideas. She ought to be a good project. Have fun bringing her back to life.

Re: 21 foot 1969 Starcraft Chieftain restoration

Here are some Pics of the engine. Im pretty sure that some of these parts are off of a Chevy. My buddy gave me a 1974 glasser that is complete for a donor boat. Should work I hope it has a shift interupter switch that works. The one on this boat does not. The thing has been rewired a few times. The last guy to have it must have changed a few things. He also laid 3/4" green treat over the rotted original floor. Again pics of that are at the office.

Re: 21 foot 1969 Starcraft Chieftain restoration

Last night I couldnt resist and I had to start stripping the glue off from the vinyl top. We are planning on painting the aluminum and doing away with the vinyl. Gotta figure out a way to fill all the holes on the top side. This sucker has had a lot of stuff mounted on it in the last 43 years!

The 120 hp 4 cylinder is GM based. So except for the marine parts it's all GM. Some of the guys have good methods for filling holes.

Just kind of worried about warping the thin aluminum top I have a little Miller 135 that will do the trick I will try somewhere that will be covered up first I think.
