I have a 20r72r Johnson that has set up for years that I am trying to get running. Let me start by listing what I have done so far, 1. New tank and all fuel lines replaced. 2. Replaced points and condenser and tested coils for continuity. 3. Rebuilt carb, knocked out all soft plugs and blew out w/ air and carb cleaner, and set float, twice. 4. I took the fuel pump apart and cleaned it out, some of the diaphragms were old looking. 5. Replaced the hose from pump to carb w/ clear hose. Now my problem. The motor runs pretty good at idle and wot w/ the hood off. I adjusted the idle mix screw w/ hood off to where it should be, when I put the hood on it dies. I adjusted it to where it was leaned out, popping a little, and put hood on it idles good, but it loads up the w/ more throttle. If I run it at wot and let it load up, it will die w/ hood on, open it up and there is no fuel in the line to the carb. I also noticed air bubbles in the line to the carb while running w/ hood off. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure it's venting, sounds like it isn't getting gas. I'd hazard a guess at fuel pump at this point. Remove the line from the carb and put in a gas container and crank, see if it's pumping fuel.

I assume you mean the vent on the tank. Been down that road twice now, learned that lesson. But now that I think about it, it was running good before I had the hell with not opening the vent. I will try unhooking the fuel line tomorrow night. Also it seems to smoke like a tar kiln. I mixed my gas 8 oz.oil to 3 gals of gas. Thanks.

Yes, venting on the tank, no venting = no gas, but usually not right away unless the tank is full full full. Smoke, yes they do but too much could be too rich and your ratio is pretty close, 7.68 is close enough to what you put in, a little more is better than not enough.
