20hp mercury 1988

it does not start i started it about a year ago and it ran for a bit i gave it gas then it died and has not started sense help

Hi Joech<br />The first thing to do is test for compression.<br /> Then test for spark.<br />Then test for fuel.<br />Your engine needs these basic things to run. Figure out whats missing and we can proably get you going.

Spray some premixed gas into the carb throat, and try it..If it sputters, no fuel is getting past thwe carb..Could vbe fuel pump, carb, or plugged filters.<br /><br />Check for spark,using a spark plug with it's base clipped to ground. DO NOT try to determine spark with the air-gap method (can blow the finicky switchbox).<br />If ity has no spark, the switchbox,coils,kill switch,wires to and from the kill switch,stator,trigger, or the trigger/stator themselves are suspect..Geeezz..I hope it's fuel.<br /><br />Good luck, and let us know what u find.
