Hello,

I have a 2014 MerCruiser 4.5L engine that will not go above 25 mph. When I do the instrument cluster starts beeping and will not let me go any faster. Normally it goes goes 50+ wide open. So im only above half throttle before it starts beeping at me. Looking online has not yielded any results so far. I am hoping someone has had this issue before and can possibly point me in the right direction with troubleshooting it.
It also has a StarGAZER Wake Perfect Pass installed on it so I'm not sure if something there is causing it. I've made sure that it is shut off and tried changing the speed settings on it to make sure it wasn't interfering to no avail.

What I Have Seen
  • This is a new issue that just started happening recently
  • All the fluid levels in everything are good, boat was last serviced in the fall with not many hours on it after.
  • Everything looks within range on the instrument cluster and nothing seems above normal
  • When you raise the tilt and trim it goes all the way up and hits a limit and shuts off, when I lower it it goes down and doesn't seem to hit that limit and the pump keeps running. This is the only abnormality I can find. It wasn't like this before. Is there a sensor or limit switch on it?
I'm wondering if there is some kind of tilt/trim sensor on it that isn't liking what it sees and cuts the boat off from going any faster?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I can get more info if that is needed!

Thanks!

Without a smartcraft readout gauge installed its near impossible to guess the cause of the alarm

You need g3 diagnostic or diacom in order to see any/all faults associated with the issue

There is a trim limit going up, but not going down. The purpose is so that you don't raise the outdrive too much while underway. No need for such going down.

It sounds like you do not have a 'Vessel View' display. Does the trim gauge show the proper trim/tilt angle ? If so, probably not the trim sensor.

As mentioned, it takes a computer to diagnose a computer managed boat/engine. Rinda Diacom or CDS G3 are the computer systems that are compatible with the Mercruiser engines. Anything else is guess-work and likely will result in a more expensive and time-consuming process.

Common symptoms tend not to be common with the newer engines, since there are so many things that can cause problems.

You mentioned boat speed, but not RPM. Knowing the RPM that the engine is limiting to would be helpful.

Well, that's no fun. Looks like the only option is to take her in. Thanks for the insights!
