Motor is running hot and the red light came on and engine shut down. I noticed also water building up under the hood in the engine pan.
Any suggestions as to what I can look for to be causing this problem?
Appreciate any help with this.

Start with replacing the water pump kit and check/test the thermostats. Any idea when they were changed out last? How was the stream of water from the pisser? Then track down the leak.

If water is seen accumulated on the pan seems the engine base gasket is dried, burned, shot, retorque all lower bolts located at the upper portion of the midsection, With motor running if the water leak stopped fine, if didn't will need to install a new base gasket. Check for any other possible source of water leaks as well...

over heat should not shut off a motor.
maybe if you let it overheat to the point it locked up it would.

if you can get it to start on muffs with the cowling off you could see where water is coming from

Hey bud, I did find an obstruction in the pisser. Cleared that but now water is flower with high RPMs but on idle it stops and it over heats.
What would you suggest?

Replace water pump. Are you using muffs or is the motor in a tank? If in a tank is the water level above the pump? Do you know when the pump was replaced last? Either way replace it, who knows the thing that was blocking the pisser water may be part of the impeller.

Does the motor triggers an overheat alarm and reduces the rpm to minimum to know it's overheating ? If the impeller or the complete water pump and thermostat has been replaced for new and the motor overheats one option is to flush the crankcase with Salt Away, follow instructions. Motors should be tested at open water at wot not on muffs, barrel....

you should never flush the crankcase with water and saltaway.
crankcase is for oil

In reality need to flush the motor's water passages located inside the powerhead with Salt Away with whichever method you like. Would be out of this world to flush a 4 stroke crankcase that way...
