2010 350 Mag MPI bravo 3 gaurdian mode issue. 5% power

hi all, i have a boat that is going into gaurdian mode under load over 3000rpm, then when you pull back on the throttle, it goes back to 100%. the rinda says gaurdian cause: exhaust co. now i do not know if it is actually CO or that is as much of the word that would fit on the screen. there are no codes other than the standard 4 unused ones. the smartcraft is giving an error code 61. this issue happens every time once it is warmed up. all the periferals look ok to me. the engine serial # is 1a614556
any help is appreciated

Unsure about exhaust co but would lead me toward the exhaust O2 sensors. Being it happens at 3000 rpm try disconnecting the in-gear switch on the shift plate. Probably won't change anything but it also won't hurt anything.

yes, i thought the same but would a bad o2 send this into gaurdian mode?

No. You may get a 2 beep alarm but you would not go into power reduction For the engine to go into power reduction limiting you to 5% power the engine is either overheating or has low oil pressure, or thinks that it is because of a sensor/wiring issue. Duplicate the problem and see what the oil pressure and engine temps are looking like in Diacom.

Your smartcraft code 61 means there is an open on the fuel injectors.

Where did you find the code 61 definition?

Guardian at 5% is telling you it’s a critical fault. That’s a forced idle situation. My experience has been that it’s common for DTS faults to be the cause of forced idle.

Something this critical will set at least one fault, maybe multiple faults. Should have a constant horn.

Remember that with this controller you must check for faults both KOEO and KOER. Some faults will only show one way.
Not sure how much good a techmate is for DTS?

I have zero experience with techmate.

I have diacom and g3 at my disposal both with current updates so I can cover many ecm/pcm controlled units

I agree that 5% guardian is critical, often times if the engine runs seemingly normal under said circumstances the issue is corrosion. Would be curious of engine/boat history. Maybe a salty?

ok, would the open on th fuel injectors be the result of the engine going into gaurdian?

Maybe.... If the engine overheated and melted the FI wiring or melted an FI that would do it. Techmates a tough tool to work with as you can not read all of the live data at the same time. Plus if you have DTS techmate won't show you any of that stuff.

as far as i know, the boat has not overheated , yes the boat came from florida, salt water and was a mess when it came. it had new manifolds/ cats done and im several other parts replaced.
what is dts?

DTS = digital throttle and shift. The remote is electronic and sends a signal to servos located on the engine package to actuate the shift mechanism and throttle plate assy


You most likely need g3 or diacom diagnostic software to properly diagnose any issues at this point

Being a saltwater boat my guess is you're dealing with, at a minimum, corrosion issues somewhere in the system.

which do you recommend more? g3 or diacom?

G3 is Mercury's proprietary diagnostic software and not available to the public. You must be a dealer associated with mercury/mercruiser to purchase/use g3

Diacom is a separate company that markets a diagnostic software tool(s) that communicate with a wide range of inboard efi engines

My suggestion is if you're serious about acquiring either diagnostic tool your easiest option is diacom

Prepare to spend around $1000 for the premium software and proper connecting harnesses

yeah, i already dropped bucks on the rinda and all the harness's so the diacom will not be much since i have everything already. i have spoken to them already but they do not communicate with other outboard companies other than merc. i would like to have the tools to do others as well. yamaha, suzuki, evinrude,,,,,,

If you want outboard diagnostic equipment you must have the proprietary equipment for each manufacturer.

This is a sterndrive forum. Outboard diagnostic equipment questions should be posted in an outboard related forum.

I only have access to g3 for outboard diagnostic equipment. If you're gonna travel repair a lot of different boats be prepared to either keep a lot of parts in your van or have a reliable supply house in your area and have multiple diagnostic tools

My manuals list a different number for an open injector. I would love to know where you found this information.

More than a few times here on iBoats people have posted codes that don’t match anything in the correct diagnostic manual. Usually it seems like they come from SmartCraft/VesselView or Volvo EVC/easy connect. With Volvo I have a conversion sheet. So I was hoping you had some sort of cheat sheet for MerCruiser.
Maybe SmartCraft or techmate outputs codes in a different format? I have very little experience with either of them.
But I don’t think there is much in #36 that applies to a PCM 09 controller.
