I just bought a pontoon with the Evinrude 70hp 4 stroke.Ran good this spring when I testdrove but now It doesnt pee.I took to lake and backed in the water and started while on trailer and in neutral it would rev to about 2000 but when I tried to go higher it started cutting out like a rev limiter and then i noticed it wasnt peeing.Only ran about 15 seconds. We pulled the foot and waterpump is fine.put muffs on and no water from peehole, well just a few drops.left foot off and put hose to water tube and still didnt get to pee.
Here are the questions I have
1 does the thermostst have to open for peehole to work?
2 Is The limited RPM a fail safe to keep from burning up engine
3 Could it be clogged somewhere.
By the way I have the side off the engine and all exposed hoses are clear. If I try to blow back through the pee tube it is blocked.Im not an outboard mechanic but have worked on alot of heavy equipment. So I admire someone that can repair these little devils.lol

That engine has a neutral rev limiter to prevent you from blowing the valve train all over the place.

Remove the pee-nozzle at the back and start. Is water getting out?
If so, clean the nozzle and put it back!!!
That engine has a temp switch on the exhaust manifold that will react first if no water, so most likely a clogged 'pee' nozzle.

The pee hole is just an indicator. You should be dumping out water elsewhere. Ex, thru the hub. If not, you're not circulating water thru the engine. if so, your indicator is just plugged. As mentioned, pull the nozzle out. If you don't have water, take an air hose and blow air back thru the line to clear out sand or debris. This happened to me once. Sucked up sand in the shallows. The engine was circulating water fine. Just wasn't coming thru the telltale......

Got home and cleaned pee line. It is clear.Put foot back on with old waterpump since new one wont arrive till tomorrow.Still no water out exhaust or peehole.Impeller looks fine but understand that doesnt mean much. Will update tomorrow after installing new pump. Thanks for all the response.

I don't know if you have this mtr or not but some of the early 70 hp 4 strokes had an additional water pick UNDERNEATH the anti-ventilation plate. This was sort of a bypass if your regular pick up screens got plugged up. When ever I would run one of them on the muffs I would take duct tape and seal off that area so the w/p wouldn't suck air.

Thanks for all the advise. I reinstalled the old waterpump last night and cleaned the pee line all the way to the manifold and still no water.Today I went and picked up new impeller and installed. I noticed the halfmoon key had fallen down into the pump housing when I removed the cover. Bingo.. Her is what Im thinking happened, the pee line was clogged at the manifold so no water peeing. When I took it apart and checked impeller and cleaned all lines and put lower unit on somehow the halfmoon key fell out of shaft and down into pump housing. When I installed new impeller I checked key and with the muffs on it PEED GOOD.Again thanks for the advise. This is what this site is about.
