We purchased an 08 Regal 1900 last year. We knew the previous owner and she never mentioned any issues with the boat. First time we took it out after it sat all winter, it seemed to lose power in the higher rpms. We’re able to idle through the no wake, but when we try to accelerate out of that area, it bogs down. On idle, almost seems there is a very slight repeated rev of the engine. After being on the water for 20+ min or so, it seems to work itself out and the boat runs fine. Can floor it with no issue I’ve read on Yamahas there is a vst filter than can cause erratic rpms. Is that what I’m experiencing here? Or am I looking at a carburetor issue? I don’t know much about boats unfortunately, first one I’ve owned.

what maintenance did you do to the boat when you bought it last year?

used boats need lots of TLC and maintenance prior to using it.

how old is the fuel?
is the fuel contaminated?

What @Scott Danforth said . . .

Maintenance? Fuel?

The boat is 14 years old . . . Since you know the person that sold it to you, do you know any history of the boat?

VST is on fuel injected motors.
carbs are not on fuel injected motors

no one but you knows what motor you have,
or did these boats only come with one kind/type/HP of motor?

She said she kept up on all maintenance basically. It was a friend of my sister in law so I don’t have direct contact. When I got the boat the tank was nearly empty, new fuel was added. I changed out the fuel filter located on top of the engine. It’s the 4.3 Volvo Penta engine.

I did forget to put in original post, it’s the 4.3 Volvo penta. Has a little over 200 hours on it

@Ross2mb you are posting in the Yamaha forum and mentioned yamaha in post #1

in post #5 and $6 you states its a volvo penta 4.3.

I have PM'd the mods to move this thread to the right forum.

having an I/O means you have much more maintenance than any outboard.

since you bought the boat last year. did you winterize properly?
have you pulled the drive for the gimble/bellows/u-joint inspection and service? alignment check?

did you change engine oil and filters?

fuel system maintenance?

we can all guess what is wrong, and I have a strong suspicion of potential things that hinge on your answer to the winterization question.

I didn’t. It was moved here for some reason
because with lack of correct information and your discussion on yamaha in post #1, the only logical conclusion was for a mod to move the thread.

Okay well it was clearly stated it’s a Regal. I simply stated I’ve tried to research it and found on Yamahas that there is that vst problem. Wasn’t t aware vst isn’t on a carbureted engine but this post in no capacity was ever about a Yamaha.

Boat was professionally winterized, oil/filter also professionally changed before I bought it. I have not pulled the U drive, as I said I’ve never owned a boat and looking for possible solutions. Other than changing out the fuel filter and putting new gas in the tank I have not done maintenance on the fuel system

Ayuh,..... You posted in the Volvo forum, with no mention of it bein' Volvo powered, but did mention Yamaha,......
hence, I'm guilty, I moved it,.....

One of the other mods moved it back here, after you finally said it's Volvo powered,......
No harm, just a foul,.....

Welcome Aboard,.....

don't suppose this is a 4.3 gxi you have ? if she is...diz cap is the go to thing that causes this...other than crappy fuel. if the diz cap is flat with leads going into the side (not the top)...a betting man would have money on this being the issue..famous for it now.

I would have to check on that because I’m honestly not sure if it’s the gxi or not. I’m thinking it is though. I was starting to think about a complete tuneup, new plugs, wires etc.

do not forget checking the contents of your fuel filter for water.

On a Yamaha ( Your boat is a Volvo Penta) there is the VST you speak of and it will cause the issue you mention. On a Carb'd engine as you mention, a sticky power valve could cause your issue. Add some Sea Foam available at any auto part store & Walmart to the fuel tank as per the directions and use the boat for a bit and see if it improves things. Good Luck.
