My dad is having problems with a 2008 50 horse 4 stroke mercury outboard mounted on a 16 foot fishing boat. He just got this motor and the lower unit went out after 3 days. Upon further research he found that the same thing happened twice to the previous owner. The dealership he got the motor from is going to take care of the problem however he is worried that something is not right on the boat such as the prop size, pitch or type of material. The shop said he should not have had a steel prop on it. has this particular motor had issues with the lower units....thanks..

Not sure why they are suggesting a steel prop. Most common is aluminum. Some aftermarket ones are composite. SS are generally used for higher power motors where flexing could be an issue due to high power and torque. Haven't heard of a lower end issue with these motors. Look for a bent shaft or something along these lines.
