2008 Mercruiser 5.0 tks Bravo drive won't engage drive or reverse and just continues to idle normally without ant perceptible change. Serial#: 1A322719

fatigued.... make that forward or reverse!

Could be a few things. Issue with the remote, broken shift cable/linkage, failed engine coupler, failure of gearset in the drive........

The shift assembly doesn't move when either forward or reverse selected.... any ideas on how to approach troubleshooting?

So when you move the shifter lever, the cables are not moving at the engine/drive?
If so, start at the remote. Could be a broken cable there or at the motor. Is the neutral "button" stuck in?
I would start at the remote and follow he cables back to see where the issue is.

When the throttle to the shift asst. (attached to exhaust riser) is moved either forward or reverse the shift asst. doesn't move at all and the cable is intact. Where is the remote, would that be where the cables enter behind the throttle? Thanks!

the control box is where the cables enter, they control throttle and shift.
If the shift assist,(black spring loaded gizmo) does not move ,the control box needs to be removed and examined."

Where can I find instructions on removal?

Mercury has a manual for the controls but not sure where other than borrowing from a shop or buying on eBay to get one.

They're not incredibly difficult to remove and disassemble, I think the most troubling is figuring out how to get the throttle only button out without marring it and sometimes access to the back side through bolt nuts can be challenging

Throttle button removal entails placing shifter in 'forward' gear then using a flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the button.... then remove underlying bolt, use flathead to remove plastic cover which reveals 6 bolts for removal of remote control box.

I know how to remove the throttle only button. Trick is to not mar it upon removal, this is why I stock the button

the cable was frozen in place due to shift cable bellows being torn, so in process of replacing shift cable and bellows along with gimble bearing and the remaining bellows because gimble bellows compromised as well.- had water inside Thanks!

also, installed new shift cable housing, but the inside cable won't thread and seems to be hanging up on a burr inside the cable... can insert a 0.65" trim line through but can feel a ruff spot about 8-12" past insertion point. Any ideas?

The outer jacket of the low shift cable is installed, but the inner cable won't go any farther then 8 to 12 inches? Is that correct?
