While your trans in limiting your towing you can always regear. A set of gears would run you about $300 if you can do this youself.
My buddy has a similar truck and he has exceeded that limit every winter towing 4 sleds on a car hauler. He takes it easy and has had no trouble.
But your present gearing may cause you some grief on a steep launch.

they don't rate my truck for any less weight with a manual trans but they felt that YOURS needed to be rated lower either because the clutch was weak OR possibly because the trans could run hot.... the zf-6 they put in the bigger trucks actually has a tranny cooler just like an auto has.

The Mazda M50D used in the F-150 was pretty stout, and was actually used behind the 5.0L for a time.
IMHO, the clutch is the limiting factor. Mine has made it known a couple of times that it wasn't too happy when I had a heavy load starting up a steep hill.

Wow that towing capacity seems awfully low. My Forester is rated for 2400 lb. My '92 4.0L Explorer 4x2 manual w/ 3.27 gears was rated for like 3400. I don't get it

I can believe it.... I am in the process of swapping out my 4r100 for a zf-6 and have been looking into clutches... I often gross at 30,000 lbs and while the trans will be fine with it the stock ford clutch from all of my research won't even be close.... My southbend clutch is gonna cost me close to $1000

If the clutch truly IS the only problem with the op/s rig. If he can otherwise pull grades and boat ramps w/o trouble then maybe a call to jessie at south bend clutch is in order. btw... shouldn't be anywhere near the cost of mine... I'm running a built up diesel... my clutch is prolly as big as your trans..... lol

Another potential option; I know Centerforce offers a clutch and pressure plate for my truck, but I wasn't able to find a listing for a 2008. Wondering if they may have something that would fit the OP's truck.
