I went to add gas to my tank, which I believe is nearly empty, and it would hardly accept any gas, appearing full. Any thoughts as to what is going on?

vent or fill tube is plugged.
Thanks. I don't know how the fill tube could be plugged, but I thought maybe the vent was, perhaps from wasps making nests in it or something similar. I believe the vent is on the side of the boat just below the fuel tank cap. Any suggestions on how to clear the plugged vent? I tried the shop vac but that didn't seem to help.

Don't use a shop vac. As the fuel vapors get to the motor, it ignites

Many times you have to pull the line off the tank to clear obstruction

If you are talking about a Crestliner (brand) Fish Hawk (model) and it is like my 2002 the vent is part of the fill port. When you pull the fuel filler cap off and look down in the hole there is the large fill hole and on the side a small vent hole.
Does the fuel gauge register full?

Yes. My boat is a 2008 Crestliner Fish Hawk 1600. It's fairly new to me, and I am just starting to familiarize myself with it. I attached a photo that I believe shows the large fill hole and small vent hole. I am not familiar with how the venting system works. Where does that small vent hole lead? Just down into the tank?

If the issue is being caused by a clogged vent, what sort of things can I do to unclog it? I did run a piece of weedeater line down into the vent (about 2'), but that didn't seem to help lower the gas level in the fill tube.

Note that after setting a few days, the fuel level had dropped a bit, and I was able to add more fuel, albeit only about a half gallon before it rose up to near the top of the fill tube.

The fuel gauge registers close to empty, which I believe to be accurate considering this summer's usage.

The fuel fill cap on my boat has 2 holes for an adapter to fit the holes giving you a blade for removing the cap if you can't remove it from the knurled edge of the cap. Mine is black plastic and on the Gunwale (top flat rail on the hull), Starboard side, about 6" from the transom. With a flashlight and mirror, you can follow the tubes to the built in tank which is just forward of the splash well and transom bracing.....24 gallon.
The vent tube probably goes to the top of the tank. Curious how that could become clogged and or the fill tube. I don't see a mechanism to cause such. If I suspected a clog, I would stick my compressed air nozzle with about 10# of pressure into the vent hole and feel for air excaping from the fill hole....since its on top also.
