2008 4.3GL Distributor Hold-Down Screw

What tool does it take to loosen the distributor hold- down screw. Some kind of tamper resistant screw.

For service in the field, VA has created a special allen wrench, which is available through our parts system as P/N 888863. It is a 7/32" hex with a center drilled hole. It is not readily available from tool dealers and a tamper proof style tor bit will not work.
The picture depicts the standard tool which we will provide through the parts system. The picture shows the end of the tool which gives it better clearance when used on the 3.0L distributor, and lets you use it with a standard 7/32* deep socket. Please refer to the applicable service manual for the
timing specifications for carbureted engines. Note! All our carbureted engines currently use the Delco distributor which requires use of Shunt tool p/n 885163 to lock the engine in base timing when setting timing.

Now that's just out and out BS

It's one thing to do this kind of thing during warranty period, but after VP should be "required" to remove and replace with a regular bolt.

Previous thread on Iboats shows the hex head to be 5.5MM and not standard 5MM

I almost posted that one too but didnā€™tā€¦. Just added to it a bit for othersā€¦ glad you posted it and Iā€™d have to think thereā€™s a tool designed out there by now that you could buy and make it work too as that is dated 2003.

I do agree with AD,.... If I stumble across one, I'll be replacin' that fancy special wrench bolt with a plain ole hex-head,....

I would remove that piece of junk once and put in whatā€™s worked since 1955. VP & Merc and their ā€œimprovementsā€ make it very easy for me to justify keeping my old boat going!

Take center punch, knock out tang in middle.

Use alen key, remove old screw

Replace with standard hardware.
