2007 Yamaha f115tlr issues

Hello Boys,

I have a problem with my Yamaha motor - and do not know enough to save my life while on the phone with Yamaha.

This is the 3rd season with this boat and it has less than 24 hours on the motor. I changed the oil & filter this season, using WIX specified parts purchased from my local Napa. The next day we filled up the the fuel (in both my boat & car) and headed out on the lake. In less than 15 minutes the boat started running horribly at higher RPMs & was blowing smoke from the exhaust. We idled back to the dock and took it to my local Yamaha repair shop.

They then contacted Yamaha. This is where it gets tricky Yamaha has given us every excuse possible as to how the engine may have blown. From the oil filter we used (which they will not release exact specifications for) to "bad fuel". They were nice enough to cover parts, which will run around $5000 but not labor, which will be around $1500.

I am sick over the fact that the motor has less than 24 hours, we do not abuse this boat and the gas was just fine - did I mention my car is still running smoothly? What can I do here? The repair shop said to hire a lawyer cuz this is b.s. but if I had the $ for that, I would just pay the labor to fix my boat.

Any help here is appreciated Has anyone had to fight with Yamaha with a positive outome?

dunno about crappy aftermarket parts, its always cheaper and easier to simply buy the correct stuff.
3 seasons with 24 hour? usually when I get them in like that its a neglect issue.
usually the engine and fuel system were never properly set up for long term storage.
long term storage means any period of non use more than 30 days.
now, what were the leak down test results?
what did the injector refurbish print out show?
what did the VST and VST prefilters look like?
what did the fuel sample show?
what is the max RPM with a normal load?
what is done when storing the boat?
changing the oil and filter on a boat with 24 hours on it is useless and wont address cooling system or fuel system maint .
if you would actually read your owners manual these systems require maint hourly OR calander WHICH EVER OCCURS FIRST.
get it all the time,impeller shreds from dry rot,customer smokes a powerhead and tells me its only got 50 hours on it,yet its 10 years old.
the reason why your car is running smooth is you turn over the fuel in your car at least weekly that nasty gas sitting in your boat tank simply fed the engine a dose of the bad joo-joo.
see that all the time.10 gallons of bad nasty gas plus 10 gallons of fresh gas equals 20 gallons of nasty gas that I have to dispose of.
this we see weekly and its easy to spot by the tacky deposits left on the intake tract,valves and piston skirts.
what happens is the nasty doesnt burn well and starts collecting on the iston skirt,eventually this coating decreases the piston to wall clearence and causes piston failure.
hire all the lawyers you wish but first pull the pistons cuase as an expert witness against you I would.
piston failure analysis is not rocket science.
if your yamaha was out of warrenty and your getting a new block and cyl head assy your way ahead of the game.try it with BRP,suzuki or merc or honda and see how the laughter starts.
did I mention almost every rig I see 3 years old with very low hours is neglected?
do you use crankcase store-n-start?
do you keep fresh fuel wth stabilizer and dispose of any fuel over 6 months old?
do you egularly change the hull mounted water seperator,six months OR every 50 hours like Yamaha reccomends.
kinda why you dont see a nascar running on last years gas,tires or coolent.but your dealership MUST find the cause of the failure or a repeat is ASSURED.

Well you did something wrong possibly the wrong filter because these motors are absolutly bullet proof. I have one with over 50K on it and other than maintenance and new water pump impeller it runs as it was when new. Next time you try to get a deep discount to save 3 bucks on the oil filter - consider going to your Yamaha dealer to get THE RIGHT PARTS - why should Yamaha pay for this??

Was it peeing when you started up the motor? Do you ever start it up, just for a second, without cuffs or in the water?

yamaha pays a flat rate of about 10 hours labor to change a power head,cyl head and the oil sump screen.
thats about what it takes if the phone doesnt ring to much.
would have been nice had you posted some leak down test numbers.
but typically a 3 year old rig with 24 hours on it dies from poor fuel quality.
adding 10 gallons of fresh gas on top of 5 gallons of nasty gas equals 15 gallons of nasty gas.
couple nasty gas,the F115 does NOT have a knock sensor, with an over propped rig and you get piston detonation .
make sure the fuel system gets cleaned,the tank pumped and the engine can turn at least 5800 RPM with the load that day.

So I am looking at a pontoon boat with an F115TLR (2007) engine on it. I read through the thread and the issues that poor maintenance can cause. What do you recommend as the best way to assure that the engine has been well maintained? Compression check? Looking for overheating? etc?
