Hi, I had to replace the 4.3L Mercruiser in my 2007 Starcraft, but was sent a 2008-up crate motor (long story, but by the time we realized it, too late to return it). Now, I need to get the correct timing cover (old was a 6-bolt, need an 8-bolt). I bought the boat new in 2007 and nothing has ever been changed. It is carbureted with a distributor and does have a sensor in the timing cover with a reluctor/trigger underneath on the crank. When trying to get the correct cover, I am being told the carbureted models did not come with the sensor and trigger (obviously not true in my case) and only came on the MPI models. So, is this sensor necessary in my case or can I get the cover without the sensor provision (a conversion cover is available that converts the 2008-newer for use with 2002-2007 MPI models)? Are there any other incompatibilities in accessories from 207 to 2008+. The water pump lines up--although, don't know it it'll clear a conversion type cover or even a 2008+ regular cover...and the parts houses can tell me either...basically, buy it and try it. The oil pan and 1-piece rear main also seem to line up. Any input or links to relevant docs much appreciated.

the sensor is plugging the hole
the reluctor tooth wheel is acting as a spacer for the damper

all the timing covers from 1996 and later have the sensor hole in them.

The reluctor being used as a spacer is what I assumed, but did not know all covers had the sensor. So, do you know if the plug going into the sensor from the wiring harness is active in any way? My last resort is to peel of the nicely done wire wrap and trace it out, but was hoping to not have to do this. Thanks for the info.

if your motor is carbureted, the sensor is not used.

there are billet aftermarket front covers without the sensor if you really want.
