2007 Mitsubishi Outlander vs 17 ft SmokerCraft

My 2007 Mitsubishi outlander FWD has a tow rating of 2000. The 17 ft SmokerCraft with 60hp motor + trailer weights I believe about 1900 lbs loaded. Anyone tow something around this size with similar vehicle? I know enough not to be dumb enough to put it in a sand launch or something steep or slime covered. Thanks for any info.

You'll find numerous similar questions posted on here and usually the general answer is you should not do it. You really don't want to come close to maxing out any vehicles tow rating. Remember that although your vehicle may tow the boat just fine it may need to be able to come to a quick stop to avoid a kid/car/dog/deer. Just my two cents.

I tow a 2500 lb boat with a Subaru Outback (2700 lb rating) and it works just fine, but I wouldn't go very far or very fast if my trailer didn't have brakes. The Outlander is about the same size and your lighter boat might be OK without brakes, but I'd be inclined to add them unless you're just towing a short distance to the boat launch at low speed.

Too bad you got the 2WD version, the 4WD Outlander has a 3500 lb tow rating and would do much better on less than perfect launch ramps.

= X, Thanks guys for the info. I think I over estimated the weight on the boat. It turns out that my SUV did fine towing it. It?s a 1996 Smoker-craft 160 Pro Tiller w/ a 60 hp 2stroke. I am guessing somewhere in 1550 to 1650 lbs range. I do not plan on try any landings that aren?t shady just yet.

The Outlander and Outback have similar power and torque the Outlander is only slightly heavier yet Subaru rates it at 2700 and Mitsubishi at 2000. I think the manufactures apply very strict numbers so they don?t end up with lawsuits. Also the FWD Outlander and the 4WD Outlander are the same other than a transfer case and obvious 4WD. Nothing makes it easier to stop or go on paved roads that said the Mitsubishi Outlander with a tow package only adds a tranny cooler and then rates at 3500 towing. Which might be a good idea if I plan on taking the boat for longer drives (atm its going to be short drives few miles)

Well there you go - add a tranny cooler and you're set. Next time go with the Subaru, eh? AWD and better resale... (Ok, I'm a Subaru fan. My brother has had good luck a few Mitsubishi's)

Resale whats resale. I will be driving this SUV for a long time. Future dreams are a Lund Boat and a lake house
