Hello all,
I have a 2005 Century Bay boat with a 2006 F115 Yamaha outboard engine this past weekend outing I noticed that the Techometer wasn't reading and/or was giving erratic rpm readings when the engine was running then went back to 0 rpm's, the rpm gauge has power because it has a reading of 0 but no rpm readings, I recently replaced the RPM gauge with a newly used used gauge and was working fine until this past weekend, it was a plug in like for like wire for wire underneath the center console, has anyone ever experience this before and what was the fix, i could use your help..

Thanks in Advance

While not familiar with your set up, a clue might be in why you replaced the gauge in the first place. In other words, did the old one have the same issues?

The only reason I replaced the tach gauge was that the original tach was weather beaten and the lens was faded and had cracks, it worked perfectly.

Ah, that’ good! Do you still have it?
Troubleshooting at its core is a logical sequence of process of elimination.

Can you temporarily plug back in the old tach?
  • If it works as it should, then your new to you, used, tach is bad
  • If still bad, then need to start tracking back from the plug to the engine. This will be harder as I am not familiar with your set up but perhaps others are.
In the meantime, I will look to see if there is a multimer test or some such for the tach signal.

Thank you for your reply.. great idea I will try that and see what happens, this past weekend I unplugged and plugged back the the new tach to see its reaction this coming Thursday when I go fishing, I saw a YT video where the gray wire is screwed to and clean it to see if that works. I have two new Interstate batteries and new oem yamaha battery to engine and starter cables that I just installed back in April due to slow engine cranking, the old battery cables were black and corroded.

Glad you have the old one!

If it’s a plug with typical male / female pins (think of your trailer harness plug) you can make or get a tool to help remove corrosion that may be impacting it operation. See this link for what I am taking about. While these kits seem stupid expensive these days, they are nice to have around, but check the size before you buy. And you can make your own. I have used the small jeweler’s screwdrivers or a drill bit that fits into the female end and use that to help get off the corrosion. Heck even a small piece of rolled up fine sandpaper works. For the male end scraping it down with a screwdriver or ice pic or will work. And to help clean it up they make this spray: link. Just be carful the stuff u get does not melt plastic! And let’s keep going: assuming (or even if not) the corrosion was the issue, you can coat the plug (and battery terminals, etc.) with some dielectric grease, link. This will help keep the corrosion in check.

In fact, do this clean up routine even with the old one. Reason: the old one was clearly making contract, and when plugged back in it may not, giving you a false indication that there is something else wrong.

Post how it goes.
