I am about to go take a look at a 2006 Yamaha 15 hp 4 stroke and need some advice on what to look for to warn me of past or present issues.

it has electric start and has been sitting in a shed for 7 months, I am aware that the impeller will probably need to be replaced but is there anything else that will need to be looked for before purchasing.

I don't usually look for the 4 stroke models when shopping for my needs but this is such a good deal I cannot pass it by.

This will be going on a 70's model 14' sea king

any comments are welcome good or bad

Has it been used for salt or fresh water? Make sure it runs before you buy it. Better completely drain,flush/clean fuel tank and delivery system before you run it, drain carbs, clean fuel filters. Does prop and lower end look beat-up by oyster bars, rocks, etc.? May be a good motor but check it out good before$$$$ Good Luck!

Very good advice Robert. I would really pay close attention to the fuel system, particularly the carbs. Take a good long test run and put it through it's paces. Any stumble on acceleration, bogging down at different rpm's, or inability to run steady at all rpm's including WOT will soon raise the price of that motor substantially. Check the oil and make sure it isn't milky looking and change it soon after you buy it. Check the oil in the lower unit for the same thing. I would also install a 10-micron fuel/water separator and get it in the line before much use.
Good Luck

Re: 2006 Yamaha 15 4 stroke purchase advise

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I showed up the fella was running the motor and not reving it at all and it was purring like a kitten, no vibration at idle.
After 30 or so minutes on the water I let her rest and am really happy with it so far.

I plan on changeing the fluids and getting a new gas tank because the one he gave me is old and it really too big to go into my boat in the spot I am used to putting the fuel, everything so far has turned out really good.

I also plan on changeing out the impeller just as a precaution.

I got the motor for 350 cash and some goods I hade he wanted that were worth about 500 ( gun stuff) so for the money i think that even if it needed a little work it would still have been a smoking deal.

I got the reciept that says he paid 2600.00 on 7-7-2007 and it came from Gander Mountain. anyone know if there is a place i could get a warranty as I think it has only got a 2 year mfg warranty, not even sure I need to bother with that though..

He told me he was going through a Divorce and needed the money real bad so that's the reason i got it for cheap.

Thanks again

For $350 you got a real steal on that motor! Now you can go through it and replace or repair anything needed, but it sounds like it's pretty much ready to go except for the water pump. Still a good idea to buy a manual for that motor and study up on it. Good Luck!

Wow, great deal on that motor, especially knowing that it runs well. I recently searched for a very recent 15-20hp 4 stroke Yamaha and found nothing under $1,750, and that one looked abused. Nice score!

Going to need a Jack plate for the boat anyone got a suggestion on good quality but on the cheaper side? it's a long shaft motor and I have a 15in transom we actually measures about 18 inches from top to bottom of transom.

OK guys I ended up rebuilding the transom on my little boat and everything has worked out great it now fits a long shaft motor just great and I added 2 supports for it (only had 1 ) so the motor would be stable at full throttle.

Thanks for all the advice
