2006 F60TLR was stuck in forward

After removing the lower unit to replace the water pump, I re-installed the lower unit again and with the shift lever (on the console) in neutral, the lower unit was in forward. Regardless of the shift lever position, the lower unit was in forward. I ended up dissassembling the lower unit to find that the shift cam had reversed itself (spun around). The lower unit defaults to forward which is a really smart design.
I thought I would share this with others in case they came across the same issue.

There is detents on the cam and unless it is worn out, should not just jump out of neutral. One always removes the lower while in forward so that when installing, you can rotate the driveshaft by turning the prop. If you had rotated the prop when installing the lower, you would have discovered early that it wasn't in neutral and corrected the shaft position.
