2006 merc 4 stroke runs for about 15 minutes and then starts to slowly lose speed until it finally just dies. When it dies it seems to spit out gas. If I take off the cover and let it sit out it is then able to restart and run again.

Do you have to re prime the engine when you re-start it?

i'm thinking the vent in the fuel tank is closed or blocked or even partially blocked?

have never had to prime to start. just a turn of the key restarts it after it cools down it seems. blew out the fuel filter. set the throttle higher.

Before you mess with any of that I would suggest you inspect your water seperater filter. If it has not been replaced replace it. I bet it will start right up and stay running this happend to a friend of mine when I took the seperator off it was completely coroded same motor as yours. They wont run right if these are off in any way filed with water or corroded.

Sounds like the high pressure pump may be failing or vapor lock. When it dies and you remove the cowling ,if you turn key to on do you hear the pump run?

i called the boat dealer where it came from and they said it probably has too much oil in it. TOld me to drain the oil and replace the filter. I will try it and post the results.
