I have a 2005 Mercury 225 that is actually a Yamaha with the lower right cylinder piston with a hole in it. It's on my 1998 Grady-White 24 Offshore. The motor has only 390 hours on it and in the last 60 hours burned only non-ethanol fuel and can't figure out why? Anyway, the cost to rebuild is $5,300. Is it worth fixing or should I look at re-powering? If I repower I will change to a Suzuki, maybe the new 4 cylinder 200hp.

Thanks,

Ken

That is a good question. From the projected cost, it sounds like you won't be doing any of the rebuild your self, if you go that way. So that answer has to come form you. A lot of folks on these forums rebuild their own engines and that cuts the cost substantially. However, if you are not mechanically inclined or simply don't have the tools and or time, then the option to rebuild or repower, is solely your opinion. If it were my engine, I would rebuilt it myself. But I have the room, knowledge and time to do so. JMHO!

Hmmm, $5300 for a rebuild or over three times that much for a new engine. Remember, changing to Suzuki means new controls, instruments and wiring. You burnt a hole due to a bad injector.

Maybe go check with your local Mercury outboard dealer for his thoughts regarding installing a rebuilt powerhead or the availability of a decent used motor similar to yours....and your motor should have some value for parts....heck, the foot could be worth $1000 to someone needing it....

More than likely the hole is a result of a fuel delivery problem.

I'd look around for a used motor before I went with a rebuild. This is the time of year to keep an eye out in the repowering market. Lots of good, lower motors going for redo able prices. Got to be quick. I called my local dealer about a F225 with 300 hours last week. Unfortunately, it was sold before before it even came off the previous owners transom
