Hi all, i hope this is the right forum. I just bought a 2005 Bayliner 205 with a 2005 Mercruiser TKI 5.0 i believe 220HP. Engine is very clean and came from 1 owner. Boat is also in excellent condition and always ran in fresh water and stored in a garage.

Owner is a Ford truck mechanic and said he did all his own maintainence. He said he never had to replace any parts but always changed fluids. My question is, What should i replace, look for or do to this boat before i put it in the water? I know a little about boats, but not alot about technical terms and names.

I looked at the anodes and they looked brand new, as did the prop. The lower unit had a little bit of black paint wore away in 1 spot, but that was it. I asked him about the impeller being replaced and he said he never had to and never had any issues with anything. He said the only thing he would do to the engine is maybe change the plugs.

I do not have access to any compression tools to check that.

I am basically looking for a checklist on a engine for preventive issues.

Thanks

which drive do you have - Alpha or Bravo?

I would recommend changing the impeller, plugs, and lubricants. I would also inspect the u-joints and bellows.

Ayuh,.... Regardless which drive, the Impeller is Way Overdue for changin'....

The bellows are gettin' close to their end of life as well....

I figured the impeller was due. I pick the boat up tomorrow, so i am not sure if it is a Alpha or Bravo. Will the engine say Alpha or Bravo on it?

I have no idea what the "bellows" is. Is it hard or expensive to do yourself? The same goes for the "U" joints.

How do i know if they are bad?

As far as lubes, it's just engine oil, lower gear oil?

Also, he said he could start it for me, but he does not have any ears. He said the antifreeze should keep it cool enough to let it run for a quick time without any water. Is this true, or should i not run it?

DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT WATER - YOU MUST USE THE EAR MUFFS OR PUT THE BOAT IN THE WATER

You will eat up a dry impeller in seconds

If you can swing it, get the SELOC Mercruiser manual. I have an 05 5.0 MPI with a Bravo III and it's a great manual. I figured out a lot about my engine and outdrive with it - along with my new friends at iBoats. ;)

edit: and SELOC has a check list

Those work great if you need a knee pad. Head up to the stickies and you can look at the OEM manuals and print off the pages you need, if and when you need them. http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html
You need manuals 14 for your drive, 31 for your engine, 37 for exhaust and cooling, and 41 for the TKS carb.

Re: 2005 Mercruiser 5.0 summerizing

Well i got some new plugs and i am going to order the water pump impeller. I have greased the gimball ring/housing that has a grease fitting on the side. I was going to grease the hinge pins (per manual) but there is no grease port like the manual shows.

The manual also says my u-joint and engine coupler can be lubed without disasembly, and are sealed, but there is no grease fitting?

I will also be lubing the prop. shaft. I inspected the bellows as best i could with the enging up and with a flashlight, and it looks almost new for the first 6"(as far as i could see) as does the shift bellows. Are they prob. good then?

Manual 31 says 5.0 MPI , my engine says TKS, are they the same? I see my engine rating everywhere as 220HP and that manual says 260HP?
