My best friend has had some medical probs lately and I'm trying to get him fishing.
2005 60hp 2-stroke bigfoot The boat is new to him and hasn't run well since he got it. The boat had been sitting and he was told it had some issues. I'm not an outboard guy and would appreciate any help I can get so I can help him.

Comp: 1(top)-119, 2-121, 3-121
Showing spark on all 3
Rebuilt carbs and fixed a few other things-backwards fuel filter, some lines not tied down.
Replaced plugs($16ea wow)fuel pump and ~2/3 of gas, I would've drained 1st, he didn't.
Found the stator connections had separated by the tie strap(looked factory) and likely had shorted. Battery wasn't charging before those connectors were cleaned up-now it is.

The engine would only stay running with the key button before the fuel pump was fixed. Now it starts easily but doesn't run smoothly(never was smooth) or at low rpms. The neutral throttle response isn't right. Give a little throttle and a bump and it will wind up and then stumble down in steps to a stall. At each stumble is a low 'poot' sound. That process is repeatable...does it everytime. After running 1 plug is burning right and the other 2 are rich.
I'm here to add anything that will help.

2005 60 ELPTO 1B035175P I can post the tag if it helps.
Thanks,
Greg

Sound like a total link & sync is needed. This process must be done in a specific sequence or you will never get it right. Yes - that procedure is detailed and far too long to type it all here. You need a Mercury service manual so you get all of these adjustments correct. Skip one or get it wrong and anything you do beyond that will likely be wrong as well.

Thanx ST. I was starting to think my post had the 'rona.
I understand procedures. The good news is a friend with outboard experience stopped by and is sure that it's only a gas problem now. We'll see what happens. If only the carb were on top.
