Re: 2005 5.0 gxi fuel pump pressure spec

I've had the same problem happen with my Volvo 5.7 GXi-C. I ended up replacing the entire fuel pump assembly and solved the problem. Yesterday, I took the old fuel pump assembly apart and discovered the return cannister had some material that more than likely caused the high pressure pump to whine by blocking the inlet screen. The return fuel that is directed back to the cannister from the fuel rail gets redistributed through the low and then high fuel pressure pumps, so the only way to get rid of the problem is remove the old fuel pump assembly. I am going to try to salvage my old pump and clean it thoroughly to use as a spare. In addition, I've used Gumout Total Fuel system cleaner and added fresh 89 octane and let the engine idle for 10 minutes and it sounded and ran great at idle. With certainty, the ethanol gas is the root cause and the only way to get around this problem is to A) Completely drain your fuel tank when not in use, and B) Run the boat regularly with fuel additives.

Your not alone when it comes to this problem. I hope Volvo Penta will listen to these complaints because alot of us are having expensive boating seasons that don't need to be this way.

Good Luck!

I'm having an issue with my high pressure pump whining on my 5.7GI F. I had a mechanic clean the fuel regulator screen, and he says the pressure is normal now. However, the pump is still whining. He told me the pump may be bad and need to be replaced. I mentioned what I've read in some of these forums and asked if he could remove the pump and inspect the cell to possibly clean. He said that he would do it, but that most mechanics aren't taking componets apert any more due to liability. how easy is this to do? I believe this was caused by bad (old ) gas or possible paint chips as I've heard from others.
My Engine is a 2006 with about 195 hours. Has anyone gone to Volvo penta about the paint chipping problem? Someone on my dock said his had paint chips in his and the manufacure replaced it free of charge. Shouldn't there be a recall?

Air causes noisy pumps.

Hello Larry,
I am having the same issue with my boat same engine. Did you resolve your issue? What did you do? I replaced my fuel pump. and the PSI is about 80 at the rail, turned the engine off and it went to 50 psi and held. thanks matt

i had same exact problem... paint chips in my fuel filter, whining noise at low rpm and idle... i tried every pressure test and finally took the boat to the shop. they ended up getting Volvo to cover the fuel pump under warranty (after a little bickering with them) and now the boat runs perfect... hate to say it, because i know the fuel pump isnt cheap, but instead of wasting money trying to fix it, you can just replace the pump assembly and call it a day. good luck.

Try this: disconnect the vapor reservoir discharge cooling hose from the connection at the port side exhaust riser. Next, plug off the nipple at the hose riser connection on the riser and let the cooling hose run into the bilge or extend it overboard and let the engine idle for 30 minutes or more and feel the reservoir and the pump. The reservoir should feel relatively cool and the pump should be fairly warm but not hot. My experience is that when the pump is whinning it is hot to the touch. If this works check for blockage at the riser connection by connecting a hose and blowing thru it. When I did this test after cleaning the pump screens and pressure regulator screen my pump ran
at a reasonable temperature and quit whinning. In my case I believe the exhaust circulating water was creating a resistance for the small cooling hose to overcome therefore little or no water circulation as occurring in the vor reservoir cooling jacket.

Check your fuel pressure regulator for the rest of the paint.

What is the factory spec for fuel rail pressure on a 5.0gxi? I checked mine today and got 50 psi while idling.
